You may have heard of “Blood Diamonds.” But have you heard of “Conflict Minerals?” Manufacturers need them to make cellphones and other new technology. Thanks to The Natural History of Science for creating this 30-minute video about them in 2015.
Thanks also the Whatis5G.Info for their extensive coverage of “Conflict Minerals.” The “Race for 5G” and all of its applications – including the Internet of Things (IoT), Automated Vehicles, and more – require A LOT of “Conflict Minerals.” Acquiring them is an ugly business.
Many tech manufacturers deliberately design their products and infrastructure so that they have short life spans or “Planned Obsolesce.” Some of the short life spans aren’t planned, though. IoT has a 74% failure rate. Utility “Smart” Meters have been plagued with mechanical problems from the start. So have Automated Vehicles.
Unfortunately, most obsolete and/or broken technology isn’t recycled. It ends up in landfills as E-Waste which is also an ugly business.
