No matter how you feel about Automated Vehicles, this NOVA video is worth watching.
Look Who’s Driving
Season 46 Episode 19 | 53m 21s
After years of anticipation, autonomous vehicles are now being tested on public roads around the world. As ambitious innovators race to develop what they see as the next high-tech pot of gold, some experts warn there are still daunting challenges ahead, including how to train artificial intelligence to be better than humans at making life-and-death decisions. How do self-driving cars work?
Unfortunately, it seems to have been produced before two recent and very scary reports about AVs were released (see 1, 2). Regardless, it thoroughly justifies concerns about them NOT being safe enough to be on public roads even though some models already are and more seem to be on their way.
Unlike traditional vehicles, AVs seem to basically be computers on wheels. Not covered in the NOVA video were the biological and environmental impacts of more computers being manufactured, operated, repaired, replaced, and discarded.
- Computers require conflict minerals
- More computers = more E-Waste
- Electromagnetic Radiation used to operate AVs is not biologically or environmentally safe AT ALL (see 1, 2)
