Facebook provides a free service for users but that doesn’t mean they don’t have ways to make money from users. They are constantly in the news for unsavory business tactics some of which is based on collecting and sharing personal user data without most users’ knowledge or consent (see 1, 2, 3). This is referred to as “Surveillance Capitalism.”
There are steps that you can take on Facebook to reduce their ability to do this. From CNET:

You can see and control data that apps and websites share with the platform using the Off-Facebook Activity tool.
If you haven’t been using the privacy feature Facebook introduced last year, you really need to start. It’s called Off-Facebook Activity and it lets you see and control data that apps and websites share with the platform and keep monitoring the kind of information third-party apps can access.
With the privacy feature, you can clear the history of apps and websites that have shared your data. You can also turn off future Off-Facebook activity, which tells Facebook to disconnect any information that the company has shared from your account. Or, you can selectively choose which companies you want to stop sharing your activity and it’ll stop showing you those targeted ads.

More unsavory business ventures include the company promoting the use of Virtual Reality (VR) during the pandemic despite serious health warnings already reported about VR use. Along with some other powerful companies, Facebook is also being sued for “Endangering Humanity with the misuse of Artificial Intelligence, Complicity and Aiding in Physical Genocide inside of China by transferring AI Technology, Engaging in Cultural Genocide of Humanity, & Controlling and programming the Human Race by Social Engineering via AI coding and AI algorithmic biometric manipulation.” Overwhelming, isn’t it?
