For many years, privacy and security experts have been warning about cybersecurity risks with “Smart Home” technology. There have been numerous reports about people being spied on and taunted by hackers (see 1, 2, 3, 4).
Of course, manufacturers collect personal data too – often without users’ knowledge or consent. Mozilla just released their annual “Privacy Not Included” list for those who’d like to learn more before buying “Smart” products.
Researchers from Carnegie Melon University have also proposed a label that would make it easier for buyers to understand the risks.
From Fox4Now:
We have increasingly been hearing about security and privacy problems with smart devices that are connected to the internet. All of these devices, from doorbells to thermostats, could one day have what’s almost like a nutrition label on them.
The label would tell you about the security and privacy features of the device.
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University came up with the design for what the label could look like.
The researchers want to have the label on the packaging and the website. They expect there would still be impulse buys where you would disregard the label, but it would help in other situations.

Smart Home Tech can also experience software outages. Google Nest users experience this earlier this week and also in 2019 (see 1, 2). Very aggravating!
Another disadvantage: all “Smart” and wireless products emit harmful electromagnetic radiation (aka “Electrosmog”) which can
- cause hair loss
- cause rashes, other skin irritations, and premature skin aging
- cause and/or increase blood sugar fluctuations
- cause and/or increase cardiac health issues
- cause and/or increase insomnia
- compromise respiratory health
- disrupt the blood-brain barrier (see 1, 2, 3)
- increase cancer risk (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
- increase risk for “Microwave Sickness”, Electromagnetic Sensitivity and Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity
- reduce immunity to viruses and other illnesses
- and MORE
