Experts haven’t given us any reason to believe that automated vehicles (AVs) are safe (see 1, 2, 3, 4). Earlier this year a new study revealed that they were only safer than drunk and/or sleepy humans AND they would NOT prevent 2/3 of accidents. According to a 2019 study, most people are terrified of them.
In regards to Tesla models, there have been numerous reports about them crashing and/or catching fire. Recent videos posted online by Tesla drivers aren’t encouraging either.

It was just days ago we noted that after Tesla released its much awaited “Full Self Driving” beta that it had also warned drivers that the software “may do the wrong thing at the worst time.”
Now, videos have started to surface of users “beta testing” FSD on city streets – and the results are alarming. Several videos show software that clearly seems inadequate, confused and outright dangerous. Most importantly, the software is being used on roads where other surrounding drivers have not consented to being part of a beta test.
Again, where is the NHTSA?
One video shows a driver saying “this is kind of challenging” approaching an intersection with construction. His Tesla display seems to show the vehicle unsure of whether it is turning left or right, before the car makes an awkward left turn, which the driver appears to have to assist with.

A second video shows a Tesla “really hitting the accelerator” then braking quickly seconds later, as the driver narrates.
“It makes you feel a little queasy,” the driver says.
Then, the car appears to far overshoot a left turn while a surprised and scared driver yells: “Holy shit!”. After the driver rights the vehicle’s turn, he exclaims: “Good lord almighty.”

In a third video, a Tesla is seen clearly confused about what lane it should be in after driving through an intersection. The car bucks back and forth between the lane it is currently in and the lane to the left of it.

Finally, there’s this video of a Tesla stopping in the middle of an intersection in the midst of making a left hand turn. After the car behind it honks, it completes the turn while crossing over a solid white line.

Recall, a couple of weeks ago we noted that FSD is supposed to allow Tesla vehicles to react to stop signs, stop lights and freeway exits.
At the time we called the software a “convenient promise”; enough of a gesture for Musk to say he fulfilled his previous promise of having Full Self Driving complete by the end of 2020, but a small enough testing size for Musk to not truly have to debut anything of substance on a grand scale.Watching the software roll out we can’t help but think it could be a long while before a final product is distributed and is being utilized ubiquitously. Until then – and as long as the NHTSA chooses to sit idly by while people’s lives are being put in danger – don’t be surprised as the stories of both Autopilot and FSD showing off neat “features” like driving through storefronts, continue.
Elon Musk announced in August that his company had implanted computer chips in animals’ brains in order to fast-track this technology for humans.
Despite warnings, accidents, almost accidents, and explosions, his company SpaceX has launched tens of thousands of radiation-emitting satellites into space (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13). Last month the company delayed a satellite fleet launch due to rocket “recovery issue” without further explanation. Regardless, more satellites were launched last week anyway.
Is this Elon’s world and the rest of us are just living in it?
