In January IEEE published warnings about wireless “smart” wearables including watches – avoid wearing them unless absolutely necessary because they emit wireless radiation which is biologically harmful. Apparently, Recycle Health didn’t get the memo:
RecycleHealth is a 501(c)(3) charity based out of Tufts University School of Medicine. We collect and refurbish fitness trackers to provide underserved populations with a method to maintain health and fitness.
IEEE isn’t the only one who has issued warnings about activity trackers. They have actually received A LOT of bad press over the years for class action lawsuits, recalls, and other problems (see 1, 2). There have been reports of them burning and shocking wearers as well as being highly inaccurate. Regardless, they remain very popular. Doctors recommend them for people who aren’t their patients. Community leaders want emotionally unstable citizens to wear them so they can monitor them. Farmers strap them to their livestock. Parents buy them for their kids. And now Recycle Health is giving them to underserved populations to help them maintain their health and fitness.
As if the underserved populations didn’t already have enough problems.
Activist Post regularly reports about problems associated with activity trackers and other wireless wearables. In addition to health risks associated with radiation exposure, they have also been the subject of class action lawsuits and recalls due to privacy and security issues. They also add to the increasingly unsafe levels of e-Waste in landfills. Last but certainly not least – sometimes they catch fire or explode.
