With all the U.S. FDA’s cockamamie science about genetically modified ‘phood’ being equivalent to natural food, something exciting is happening within the European Union regarding GMOs.
Do readers know that the EU has given its individual member states OPT-OUT provisions from GMOs in their respective countries? Wow!
What gives anyway, since here in the USA, we can’t even have GMOs labeled!
Something’s not quite cricket, and that begs one to ask, “Should the United States join the European Union?” if there is so much more respect for science and the foods people grow and eat in the EU. That way, U.S. consumers—all 93 percent of us [1]—would have our requirements that GMOs be labeled respected and enforced, instead of FDA’s kowtowing to Monsanto and its pseudoscience.
More than half of the EU states—19 out of 28—have opted out of growing GMOs in their respective domains. Here’s a listing [2] of those countries U.S. consumers should envy:
- Austria
- Belgium for the Wallonia region
- United Kingdom (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Cyprus
- Denmark
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Italy
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- The Netherlands
- Poland
- Slovenia
To the above list, let’s not forget that Russia also banned GMOs and Vladimir Putin says that Russia has enough resources in land and people to grow its own food and doesn’t have to import GMO ‘phood’. There are other countries, which have banned some or all GMOs; they include India, Japan, New Zealand, and Thailand [3].
Then, sadly, there are those countries that have accepted, promoted, pushed, grow and export their glyphosate-laden GMOs. They include: United States of America, the ‘premiere GMO control freak’ country, Canada, China, The Philippines, South Africa, many South American countries, Spain, and Zambia.
Ironically, in the USA there’s the DARK Act trying to work its way through Congress. It would prohibit states from requiring GMO labeling of food [4]! Where’s Congress’s collective brain? Do members of Congress sit on it?
Take a look at where GMO labeling goes on in the world. Paradoxically, U.S. citizens think they live in a free country that’s not controlled by corporate interests and seedy bureaucrats in federal agencies.
Below is another chart, which illustrates foods and crops that are GMO. Not much left that isn’t, is there?

Personally, I think GMO labeling and ‘phood’ must be made a 2016 presidential race issue. Start that campaign now by emailing both Democrat and Republican presidential wannabees to ask where each stands on GMOs and to make it a plank in his/her platform.
