CNN obtained the Facebook posts of Fort Hood’s most recent accused shooter Ivan Lopez and is reporting that he criticized accused Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza prior to his own supposed shooting rampage and suicide:
Lopez wrote that Lanza “pretends to be a victim of a mental illness followed by addiction to violent video games” and that the shooter sought “international attention” and a “minute of fame as a villain.”
He added, “It is stupid to me that anyone can have easy access to a powerful weapon without being mentally evaluated. This makes the government indirect accomplice… These bastards have perfected their way of attacking studying previous massacres to gain publicity and their minute of fame as a villain. But thanks to Hollywood and the sensational profiling by the media [they] give more power to those intelligent cowards.”
Doesn’t that statement seem a bit out-of-character for someone who is himself about to go shoot up a place, killing three and wounding another 16 people before taking his own life?
Obviously Lopez was not “mentally evaluated” specifically so he could purchase the .45-caliber pistol he reportedly used in the Ft. Hood shooting, fitting himself squarely into his own Lanza criticism.
Was he advertising for more gun control based on limiting someone’s ability to obtain a firearm in spite of mental illness?
Lopez’s statement might as well be a gift to gun grabbers like Senator Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who in the past has advocated revoking the 2nd Amendment rights of veterans and, well, basically anyone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness:
“I love our veterans, I vote for them all the time. They defend us,” Schumer said. “If you are a veteran or not and you have been judged to be mentally infirm, you should not have a gun.”
So far it has been reported that 34-year-old Spc. Ivan Lopez had an unstable psychiatric condition (although he had never been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder), and that he had been prescribed multiple medications including the controversial sleep aid Ambien.
Why is Ambien controversial? The FDA requires the drug’s packaging to warn people about all the stuff they could do in their sleep without even knowing it. For years, tales of people on Ambien sleepwalking, sleepeating and even sleepdriving have peppered the news and resulted in multiple lawsuits. One woman supposedly gained 50 pounds eating in her sleep while on the drug, for example. Former Rep. Patrick Kennedy crashed his car into a barricade on Capitol Hill back in 2006, an accident which he later blamed on Ambien.
But just weeks before the Ft. Hood shooting, a story also came out that the drug not only essentially turns people into zombies, but was actually linked to all manner of dangerous behavior and violence including prior mass shootings:
In 2009, 45-year-old Robert Stewart was convicted on eight charges of second-degree murder after he killed eight people in a nursing home. He was originally charged with first-degree murder, but by claiming his tirade was Ambien-induced he was able to have the charges lessened and sentenced to 142-179 years in prison.
In a similar case, Thomas Chester Page of South Carolina was sentenced on five counts of attempted murder despite his claims that Ambien was the cause of a shootout with officers. He received 30 years of prison on each count, to be served concurrently.
…In the courtroom, cases related to Ambien use have ranged from shootings to child molestation charges to car accidents. In one such case, flight attendant Julie Ann Bronson from Texas ran over three people – including an 18-month old who suffered from brain damage as a result. When Bronson woke up in jail the next morning, she could barely comprehend what she had done. (source)
Lopez’s father recently made a statement that his son’s behavior was totally out-of-character as well. “My son could not have been in his right mind,” Lopez Sr. said. “He was not like this.”
And not everyone agrees that mental health issues and prescription medications should automatically be blamed as the go-to, default reason for a mass shooting, including Former Senior FBI Profiler Mary Ellen O’Toole:
“I’m really stunned by the general saying that the underlying cause is unstable mental health… many people in the world have unstable mental health. Many people take Ambien. They don’t go out and kill themselves and kill other people,” she said. “Unstable mental health can be one of the risk factors for someone deciding that that’s what they’re going to do. But it’s not the only risk factor.” (source)
Whatever the case may be, it is more than ironic that Lopez would specifically reference and condemn Adam Lanza for committing a mass shooting — and blame it on the government not controlling access to firearms for people with mental conditions — right before going out and perpetrating his own mass shooting which is being blamed on having access to a gun while having a mental condition.
