On Wednesday Russia conducted military exercises in its southeastern Rostov region, which borders Ukraine, a spokesman for Russia’s southern military district told Reuters.
The spokesman denied comment on any details of the exercises, but television footage shot by Reuters reportedly showed a hefty gathering of military vehicles and weaponry including jeeps, armored personnel carriers, mobile multiple rocket launchers, and mobile surface-to-air missile launchers.
At the same time US troops have set foot in Poland for military exercises that are a part of the US’s attempt to “shore up” America’s Eastern European allies in the face of Russian tampering in Ukraine.
According to a press secretary at the Pentagon, 600 troops are set to enter countries bordering Russia and Ukraine over the next month.
Since the uprisings began in Ukraine over President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to abandon an agreement that would have strengthened ties with the European Union and instead sought closer cooperation with Moscow late last year, the country has been ripped apart by geopolitical big wigs in the West, causing tension to build among the people of Ukraine and the Russian government.
The Crimean referendum in March set the stage for US Russian tensions that has now slowly inched the two military powers closer to militarized conflict.
As analysis comes to the conclusion that Vladimir Putin is likely to keep pushing ahead in Ukraine, it is uncertain whether or not this conflict can stay cold between the US and Russia.
Hypocrisy reeks from the US’s justification for the show of force. As the leaked phone call between US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt showed us, there is a tug-of-war behind all the propaganda over the destiny of Ukraine.
War is unpopular in the United States, but the around-the-world militarization ceases to stop. This conflict, if further military action is taken, is one that can potentially send political shockwaves through the war-tired USA.
