How to Call Congress About Voting NO on Striking Syria (Video)

Some people might think it’s pointless to call Congress if an issue is pervasive enough to demand real action.

Congress does, after all, have a dismal 15% approval rating. Some people might wonder if there’s even any point to picking up the phone. Some might think they are only just one person, and they might rhetorically wonder, “Why bother?”

And some people might underestimate their own power. In the video above, we called all the leadership in Congress (and more!) and told them to vote NO on any military intervention in Syria. Some phone lines were so bogged down, we couldn’t even leave a message! These calls to congress ARE having a powerful effect!

Just yesterday, New York Republican Rep. Michael Grimm announced he had changed his mind on his vote in support of President Obama’s decision for military action in Syria. His reason?

In a statement Thursday, Grimm says the window for action has now passed and that the feedback from his constituents has made him re-think his previous position.

“Thus, after much thought, deliberation and prayer, I am no longer convinced that a U.S. strike on Syria will yield a benefit to the United States that will not be greatly outweighed by the extreme cost of war,” Grimm said. [emphasis added]

Activist Post is reporting that Michigan Congressman Justin Amash has Tweeted that anyone in Congress who votes for bombing Syria might as well clean out their office due to unprecedented public opposition:

We might all be ‘just one person,’ but together, we have power. Over 90% of Americans do not support bombing Syria. We need to let our voices be heard in Washington.

Go to Congress.gov for a complete list of your Congresspeople’s contact information. These are our public servants. We voted for them to represent us (us, not lobbyists with wads of corporate cash) and to be our voices on Capitol Hill. Call them and tell them how you feel about more innocent people dying for another Middle Eastern regime change for profit and empire building!

If over 90% of us do not want to bomb Syria, then 90% of Congress should reflect that.

With President Obama’s request for authorization to strike Syria over chemical weapons claims, the American people face yet another venue of war, beleaguered by well over a decade of the War on Terror and ongoing conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and other targets in the region.

Obama called for a vote after being pressured by numerous members of Congress, and attempted to use it as a rally point for his next ‘humanitarian’ ‘peace’ action. Now, thanks to people raising their voices loudly enough to be heard, Obama faces a likely defeat in the House – by the current dynamics anyway.

There are still several days until a vote can be brought to the floor next week, and Obama, Vice President Biden, Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader Cantor, Minority Leader Pelosi and Minority Whip Hoyer are all pulling strings to drum up “yes” votes to authorize war with Syria.

Don’t let these false leaders deafen the voice of the people. Call Congress and urge them to side with an overwhelming majority of Americans and keep the country out of yet another costly war – one that could trigger a wider war and diminish our place in the world. Enough is enough!
