Guantanamo North: Abolish Secret Certificates and Secret Trials Immediately

How would you feel if one of your friends, family members, children or spouse were thrown into prison, indefinitely, WITHOUT ANY CHARGES here in Canada of all places? Did you know that that goes on here? I’m sorry to burst your bubble if you didn’t, but you need to know that this has been the case in our country since 1979!

After the events of 9/11, the Canadian government rolled in something called ‘Secret’ Certificates and ‘Secret’ Trials which in so-called ‘political’ logic allowed the following UN-constitutional, UN-democratic, racist policy to slip through under our very noses.

Those detained under security certificates are:

• Imprisoned indefinitely on secret evidence, though no charges have been laid against them;
• Tried in unfair judicial proceedings where information is not disclosed to the detainee or their lawyer;
• Denied the full right to appeal when the certificate is upheld in a process that uses the lowest standard of proof of any court in Canada;
• Under threat of deportation even when they face unfair imprisonment, torture or death.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down and discuss Secret Certificates and Secret Trials with one of the The Secret Trial 5′s victims: Mohamed Harkat with his wife Sophie Harkat in their home in Ottawa Ontario.

Let it be known that among the current 5,804 signatures to date, Harkat supporters include: The NDP Party, The Green Party, Amnesty International Canada, Ontario Civil Liberties Association, Canadian Association of University Professors, Canadian Union of Public Employees, Canadian Union of Postal Workers, International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group, Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association, Independent Jewish Voices Canada, and the list goes on and on.

By this reality, is it not painfully obvious that Canada’s people and the people of the world have spoken? It is time to abolish secret trials and secret certificates immediately.
