Panetta: US and the UN Will Not Allow Iran to Develop Nuclear Weapons

The Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) is “non-profit, non-partisan institution dedicated to informing the public about science and policy issues affecting international security.”

The ISIS have been tracking Iran’s nuclear program. Based on the findings of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), ISIS has declared that Iran is pursuing uranium enrichment, which is a violation of the UN’s resolution demanding that the sovereign nation of Iran suspend all activity.

ISIS’s founder is the former UN IAEA nuclear inspector, David Albright.

Both ISIS and the IAEA are purveying the idea that Iran is secretly developing nuclear weapons. These agencies are arms of the UN.

The UN has been very vocal, as well as the US, about their disapproval of Iran’s nuclear program. The international body does not recognize Iran’s right to technology; as is supported in other independent countries.

In reality, Iran’s uranium enrichment is minuscule and nowhere near close to the actual production of a nuclear weapon. Their level of production is at 2.7%, dating all the way back to 2007. They would have to be at 90% grade to be able to produce a nuclear weapon.

The report cited a May 9 letter from Iranian officials suggesting any enrichment at 27% was inadvertent. The letter said the particles were produced “above the target value” and could have been for “technical reasons beyond the operator’s control.”

ISIS makes an assumption in their report: “This total amount of 2.7% low enriched uranium hexafluoride, if further enriched to weapon grade, is enough to make over five nuclear weapons.”

And ISIS even admits that Iran’s “higher-grade uranium was converted to reactor fuel and would not be available for weapons production for many, many years to come.”

Iran refutes accusations they are planning to develop nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic says it wants to continue producing 20% uranium to fuel its research reactor and for medical purposes.

The IAEA said that Iran had possession of 350 enrichment centrifuges, buried under rocks and soil. This hidden stash, claims the UN agency, is the smoking gun proof that Iran is enriching uranium for nuclear weapons purposes.

However, Iran has a less devious explanation for traces of uranium found at nuclear sites. They are in development of two nuclear power plants , according to Fereidoun Abbasi, Iran’s nuclear chief.

The IAEA report did concede that the discovery of uranium was a “ technical glitch ” and that Iran’s explanation “sounded plausible.”

Following suit, the Obama administration is also going on an assumption, believing that Iran is just lying about their nuclear program.

Iran maintains that nuclear power and technology for cancer treatments are the reason for uranium enrichment. Iranian officials assert that the US and the UN are exaggerating Iran’s nuclear endeavors for political reasons.

In an interview with ABC News , Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said very bluntly, that if diplomacy fails in Iran, the US military have a “plan in place”.

“One of the things that we do at the Defense Department is plan. And we have – we have plans to be able to implement any contingency we have to in order to defend ourselves,” Panetta said.

The Obama administration is gearing up for possible war with Iran. Panetta remarked about the union between the US and the UN in a fight against Iran when he said:

The fundamental premise is that neither the United States or the international community is going to allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. We will do everything we can to prevent them from developing a weapon.

Both the US and the UN have been calling for the regime change and reassessment of the independent nation of Iran. The US government, who placed international sanctions on Iran by freezing their access to their central bank and trade capabilities.

China, India and Russia have all continued their trade arrangements with Iran by using gold as currency and forgoing the use of the US dollar as the global reserve currency.

This action has allowed Iran to continue to conduct business and keep their country’s economy afloat . . . and has made the Obama administration quite frustrated.

Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State, was in India earlier this month, pressuring the Indian government to stop purchasing oil from Iran. The US wants India to stop patronizing Iran because their financial support of the Middle Eastern nation is a direct affront to the sanctions the US has placed on Iran.

Clinton is convinced that crude oil is in such abundance in the international marketplace that India can get their needs met there, rather than with Iran.

Of course, on the international market, the US would benefit through trade, as well as the use of the US dollar as the global reserve currency.

Currently, India is using gold to pay for Iranian oil. The US is financially affected by India’s use of gold as currency, as well as their purchase of Iranian oil despite US sanctions.

India is the second largest purchaser of oil from Iran. The country spends near $12 billion US dollars per year. That amounts to over 200 tons of gold. The sanctions that the US has placed on Iran in a prelude to an illegal war to steal Iran’s resources for profit, means that India has chosen to use gold to keep the flow of Iranian oil into their country.

The Chinese have also invested in a new oil refinery in Saudi Arabia. China’s oil consumption is 1.39 million barrels a day from Saudi Arabia. This is important because in 1973, Saudi Arabia agreed to sell its oil exclusively to the US. This agreement has affected the “petro-dollar” and the use of the US dollar as the global reserve currency.

The US has taken such an aggressive stance concerning Iran, nuclear weapons, and sanctions against the Arab nation because the current status of dealings between Iran, China, India and Russia are ultimately compromising the US dollar by:

  • Severe devaluation of the US dollar
  • Rise in price of “cheap imported goods”
  • Significant rise of national debt due to inflation

When it comes down to it, the Iran situation is about the US government’s anger and frustration that this sovereign nation is surviving despite the sanctions placed upon it by the self-serving superpower known as America.

The Obama administration wants the continued use of the US dollar as the global reserve currency because it is the global financial markets that dictate the US dollars’ worth. As that number drops, so does the purchasing power of the US dollar; as well as the ability of the US government to rule over the world’s currencies.

The latest accusation from the IAEA and ISIS is just another ploy to gain support for a lie that will justify the US military invasion of Iran.
