Despite evidence linking popular antidepressants like Prozac to suicide more than 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 12 are now taking antidepressants prescribed by their doctors. In fact, antidepressants are now the most common drug among people aged 18 to 44, according to statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics.
Even more notable is the fact that once prescribed, individuals generally keep taking antidepressants for years. Over 60 percent of patients prescribed antidepressants report taking them for more than 2 years, and 14 percent for 10 years or more. This is unfortunate when the drugs meant to help depression actually cause further depression.
Of course these statistics are very troubling given the extreme side effects that go along with antidepressants. You may not be aware of these side effects, as pharmaceutical drug companies have tried their very best to keep them from hitting the media. Shockingly, the makers of Prozac – Eli Lilly & Co., were able to hide the link between Prozac and suicide for 15 years. Through denial and media deception, Eli Lilly & Co. were able to keep Prozac dangers a secret from the general public, choosing profits over deadly consequences.

Another concerning fact revealed by United States government researchers is that less than 1/3 of Americans taking a single antidepressant have seen more than one mental health professional in the last year. When it comes to more than one prescription, only 1/2 of patients have seen a mental health professional over the same time period. What this means is that these people are not getting a second opinion, relying only on the diagnosis of a single doctor who has been trained only how to treat mental illness with pharmaceuticals.
This is particularly troubling considering that 1 in 4 patients are admittedly misdiagnosed with depression by their healthcare provider. Without a second opinion, 25% of patients will be taking antidepressants for absolutely no reason.
Keep in mind that legitimate mental illness may actually be a result of pharmaceutical consumption, as a new report published in the journal Nature has found. By permanently destroying beneficial bacteria within your gut, antibiotics decimate your overall gut health. Studies have found that gut health is directly linked to mental health, meaning that pharmaceuticals are actually creating more mental illness to be ‘treated’ with even more antidepressant pharmaceuticals!
- Exercise: Harvard research has proven exercise to be extremely effective in treating and preventing depression, anxiety, and a number of other conditions. In fact, as little as 15 minutes of exercise per day can make a huge difference.
- Avoid processed foods: Avoiding processed foods will allow your body to perform its biological functions much more efficiently. While avoiding processed foods, artificial sweeteners, genetically modified ingredients, and other toxic substances is the basic starting point of optimum mental health, restoring your gut health is also key to ridding yourself of depression. Through the consumption of probiotics, you can restore beneficial bacteria that has been damaged through use of antibiotics.
- Rid the body of stressors and waste: Your body can hold high levels of unwanted chemical stressors, compacted waste, and even parasites. Begin by super-hydrating. Drink half your body weight in ounces each day in purified, fluoride-free water. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you will want to be consuming 80 ounces of water throughout the day.
