People’s State of the Union Address 2011
Every year, the president of the United States gives the State of the Union Address. Shouldn’t the people tell their government the state of the union, not the other way around? That is the philosophy that drove us to create the People’s State of the Union Address 2011, scheduled for July 23 on Capitol Hill from 1 p.m. – 10 p.m. We are a small group of activists from all over the United States, and we think that the people are the fourth branch of the government. However, the only way we can be heard is if we speak!
Our event seeks to promote positive social change. What is positive social change? It is progress towards a world in which others are free to live their lives the way they want to, provided it does not infringe upon others’ rights in the process. We are supporters of such issues as environmentalism, government transparency, cultural and religious tolerance, separation of church and state, gay rights, the safe and swift return of our troops home, and uniting a divided country of Democrats and Republicans into one effort against tyranny.
We campaign against those issues that restrict freedom, or those that promote injustice, such as censorship, police brutality, tax cuts for the rich, bullying, and corporate influence in government.
July 23, we will come together on Capitol Hill in peaceful protest and enact direct democracy. You’ll be able to find us by looking for the group of people with their index fingers extended, a symbol of unity. A couple of us organizing the event will give speeches, along with some other people who have volunteered to give speeches. We encourage you to prepare your own speeches and bring them with you, so your voice can heard. Your opinion matters just as much as anyone else’s. News reporters are also welcome!
Our main goal is to maintain a peaceful protest. We can make this happen. The world is changing, and we can help ensure it is for the better. Let us show our true American spirit by engaging in this act of protest. We can do this, but we need your help! Will you be there?
