If there was any question on President Obama’s policy towards State medical marijuana (MMJ) laws and patients rights who have signed up in fifteen states to legally obtain the necessary medicine to treat their medical needs from HIV, Cancer to chronic pain; the wait should be over and the jury of public opinion will be in shortly.
Since 2009 (MMJ) advocates were falling all over themselves in adulation when Attorney General Eric Holder issued the Ogden memorandum through Deputy Attorney General David W. Ogden to various State Federal prosecutors telling them to “…not focus federal resources in your States on individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana.”
However in retrospect it is clear that such love for Obama’s policy was and continues to be misplaced.
Me Thinks You Speak With Forked Tongue.
While hindsight is 20/20 there were several incidents at the onset of Obama’s Presidency that continue to this day that should have any MMJ supporters of the present Administration wondering if all of his promises and rhetoric were a mere bait and switch to garner the young progressive vote without such he would have never made it into the Oval Office.
On June 2, 2007 in a Laconia New Hampshire meeting then Sen. Obama stated in regards to MMJ patients and caregivers that he didn’t “…think that should be a top priority of us, raiding people who are using … medical marijuana. With all the things we’ve got to worry about, and our Justice Department should be doing, that probably shouldn’t be a high priority.” The same sentiments were issued at three other cities in NH.
The most poignant one on August 21 in which he stated that he “…would not have the Justice Department prosecuting and raiding medical marijuana users. It’s not a good use of our resources.”
However nothing could be further from the truth of the matter; to the contrary, President Obama has broken yet another campaign promise. As the old saying goes actions speak louder than words. Just days after his moving into the Oval Office, DEA minions acting under acting administrator Michele Leonhart raided a MMJ dispensary in South Lake Tahoe CA.
More recently in a coordinated attack, agents from the DEA, BATF, FBI as well as local Law enforcement raided no less than ten MMJ dispensaries across “Big Sky” country. Of course it was purely coincidental that this operation occurred just after the Montana Senate Committee failed to repeal its State MMJ laws after Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer vetoed a bill that would have repealed the States voter approved law. This makes one wonder just who butters whose bread in the law enforcement community of Montana. The audacity of no dope.
Federal Coup d’etat: Governor, the judicial branch is leaking under the door!
If all the aforementioned weren’t bad enough, last Friday the DOJ informed the Gov. of Washington (This is a must read) that they would not rule out the prosecution of State employees who license MMJ growers, sellers and retail locations.
Again was it a coincidence? Nope! Washington State just passed a bill that would allow state employees to do just that and it was awaiting Gov. Christine Gregoire signature; a signature whose prospects went up in smoke.
While U.S. Attorney Durkan cosignatory of the aforementioned letter stated that the DOJ has not “…prosecuted truly ill people or their doctors for using marijuana to lessen suffering, as permitted under state law…”, one has to wonder where his logic or reasoning skills went to considering his throwing down the gauntlet to fifteen States rights and its citizens.
That’s like hospital CEO’s saying to dying patients relatives that they are not killing the patient while at the same time instructing their physicians to withhold life saving medicine to the patient. This action on the part of Washington State Federal U.S. Attorneys is direct interference in the legislative process of respective States. Again the audacity of no dope.
Nail in the Coffin: How much more before we wake from our dream?
At this point of the conversation it should be apparent that Obama is no friend to the MMJ community; but somehow we are stricken with political amnesia from blunt force trauma to the back of the head by the “Audacity of Hope”. AGAIN! We have yet another example of “in your face” “fuc* off” message that just might awaken us from the state that we have all been in.
Remember the DEA administrator Ms. Leonhart? Well she was nominated by Obama to head the DEA in the face of objections from the MMJ community. I won’t spell all out for you that would spoil the fun. Instead just Google “Ms. Leonhart” and see what you come up with.
On a final note Ms. Leonhart equates the increased violence south of the border to success that the “Drug War” policy is winning: “It may seem contradictory, but the unfortunate level of violence is a sign of success in the fight against drugs,” For the last time…the audacity of no dope.
While progressives and liberals who approve of MMJ continue to look to the President as a savior from the drastic consequences of the failed “War on Drugs” or more specifically the war against MMJ; it seems that the Obama MMJ advocates honeymoon is over or at the very least heading to an annulment.
