WASHINGTON (AFP) – The White House said Thursday the United States and the world community had the “capacity to act” in case of a major disruption to oil supplies following events in Libya.
“We are in touch with the IEA (International Energy Agency) and we have the capacity to act in the event of any particular supply disruption,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
Carney did not say what specific steps the White House might take to mitigate the situation.
The White House comments came as three Democratic lawmakers called on President Barack Obama to tap the US strategic stockpile of oil reserves to keep gasoline prices low in the face of turmoil sweeping the Middle East.
