Tonight, the U.S. Senate voted by 69 to 26 to move S.510 forward, ending debate on the Food Safety Modernization Act. They are now voting on the proposed amendments.
UPDATE 1: Senate voted to reject the Johanns Amendment to S510 by a vote of 61-35. Johanns Amendment uses “unspent federal funds” to pay for the repeal of a requirement on small business to file a 1099 tax form when spending more than $600.
UPDATE 2: By a vote of 53-44, the Senate rejected the Baucus Amendment to #S510 to repeal 1099 requirement, paid for by “adding $19 billion to federal deficit” which is how Sen. Johanns, an opponent, characterized it.
The 1099 requirement showed up in ObamaCare and requires businesses to submit a tax form when spending over $600. It increases the paperwork burden, and to which small businesses widely object.
The vote on these amendments, technically, was a vote on whether to suspend Rule XXII, and thus allow amendments to S 510.
UPDATE 3: Tuesday morning, the Senate will vote on whether to adopt two more amendments, one being the Coburn Amendment to ban earmarks thru 2013.
