The United States is going to attempt to quickly arm Taiwan as the “China threat” grows. However, Joe Biden and Xi Jinping recently met at the G20 summit, and both claim to be optimistic about US-China relations in the near future.
“This meeting was both a continuation of exchanges up to now and augurs a new starting point,” China’s foreign minister Wang Yi told reporters after the summit, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry transcript that also appeared in People’s Daily. “The U.S. and China should show the world that they are able to manage and control their differences,” he said.
With “peace and stability” allegedly the goal, will the US make it clear they intend to continue to be involved in literally every conflict that arises on the planet?
The security of Taiwan was a major topic of discussion between the pair of rulers, with Biden emphasizing that the U.S. and the world expect the Taiwan strait to remain peaceful. However, the congressional effort that would tap the Department of Defense to deliver weapons proves otherwise. Javeline and Stinger launchers, anti-ship cruise missiles, anti-air defense systems, self-detonating drones, naval mines, command-and-control systems, and secure radios, are expected to be sent to Taiwan if Congress approves, the Washington Post reported.
The rulers want to “preemptively arm Taiwan” to avoid the “failures” of not sending enough to Ukraine, according to a report by Fox News.
Wang also offered a reminder that the long standoff over the future of Taiwan remains a source of potential crisis. Xi, like other Chinese leaders, has insisted that the self-ruled island will eventually unify with Beijing. In the talks with Xi, Biden said that Washington would hold to its “one China” policy, which acknowledges Beijing’s claim to the island but does not go as far as accepting that claim, and opposes any steps to unilaterally change the status of Taiwan, according to a report by The New York Times.
Wang has one additional suggestion for Biden:
“Stop trying to contain and beat down China, stop meddling in China’s domestic affairs, and stop hurting China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests,” he said.
