Demonstrators in the 60s learned to beware of inciters of violence as frequently agents provocateurs intending — and often succeeding — to discredit the demonstration and its cause and elicit police violence in response short term and more pervasive repression long term. In recent years demonstrations in the Berkeley-Oakland area have seen masked inciters of violence who often gave the impression of being agents provocateurs. Not infrequently, despite the masks, their build an bearing suggests people who would look aptly dressed in uniform. In reporting and discussing, as well as witnessing, such events, it is key to keep this in mind.
And in the bigger frame, we need to remember that non-violent protest has sometimes succeeded, where violent protest characteristically incites — and “justifies” — counter-violence from forces that specialize in violence, who are usually victorious in the short run and in the long run.
The sit-down strike is a tactic that has a notable success rate and needs revival.
