Time out, lunch detention, and in-school suspension are all forms of discipline, among others, which teachers have employed to punish students for misbehavior. But after Frank Harvey, 17, a Manville, NJ, high school senior, completed a pro-2nd Amendment project, his school ordered him to get his head checked.
The incident began Monday after Harvey, as many students sometimes do, left his USB drive in the computer lab. Another student opened Harvey’s 11th-grade project and reported him to school officials.
At 7pm Monday evening, Harvey’s family said they were paid a visit by local law enforcement, who investigated Harvey’s claims the project was from last school year, and cleared him of any criminal mischief.
But that apparently wasn’t enough to satisfy the Manville School District who suspended and then promptly ordered Harvey to undergo a 5-hour psychological evaluation stemming from the months later discovery of his anti-gun control project.
It seems the teacher, who assigned the work, can no longer recall having done so. But the 12th grader disagrees and so does his family.
Harvey said his teacher approved his topic (against gun control), he completed the project, and received an “A” for his efforts.
Harvey, now a 12th-grader, says he completed the project as an assignment for his College Career Readiness class during the 2015-16 school year.
Screenshots of the video project titled “About Guns” show Harvey’s position was supportive of an individual’s right to self-defense using guns. He cited several incidents involving home break-ins that were thwarted when a homeowner fought back with a firearm.
Harvey also inserted a few political cartoons which suggested citizens should arm themselves in the event of an active shooter scenario, and another which stated gun-free zones don’t keep citizens safer.
The Harvey family, so disturbed by the demand their son undergo a psychological evaluation, and desiring to clear their son’s name, took their case to the court of public opinion and notified New Jersey’s News Channel 12.
“I’ve never been a violent person,” the soft-spoken young man told reporter Chris Keating adding, “I’ve never had detention in my life!”
Explaining further, he said, “It was assigned by the teacher and I got the topic which was anti-gun control approved by the teacher.”
Harvey’s mother Mary Vervan said, “I’m not taking him for a psychological evaluation because this teacher is lying and won’t own up to what she did.” Vervan alleges, “the teacher assigned it, my son did his homework, and he got kicked out of school for it.”
“They basically labeled them, pigeonholed them, torment them, hold that against them, watch every move they make,” Vervan said in reference to the treatment her son received.
The Manville School District refused to comment on Harvey’s individual case with reporters but the incident has now made national news in what appears to be yet another suppression of a student’s right to free speech, notably speech involving a position supportive of firearms.
His family, instead of complying with the school district’s orders, withdrew Harvey from Manville High School and he now says he’s focused on earning his GED.

It has concerned me how this so-called “Politically Correct” movement is becoming rapidly more and more violently restrictive – just the way Mao’s Cultural Revolution did about 50 years ago. We are in a similar destructive spiral. We will soon be killed because we don’t comply with the “PC police.” Arm yourselves, become proficient, let folks know where you stand; as we may soon be fighting for our lives as well as our liberty. Thank goodness his parents are fighting this. Since when does a school get to order a psyche eval? They should sue because if the school gets away with it others will suffer and getting into college will be much harder for him if his name is not cleared.

2. It literally only takes 2-3 hours a day. If you can’t find 2-3 hours a day for your child, what kind of parent are you?

The abuse and misuse of official power is rampant. If it’s not the cops abusing their power, it’s the school officials who still have control over a senior in high school. The rules and laws for psych evaluations are crystal clear, and this young man’s record is also crystal clear, towit, not one detention or problem ever. Unfortunately for him, he’s one of the 48% of students and minors not being officially drugged with anti-depressants, psychotropics, Ritalin, Adderall and other “legal” drugs. In a nation of tattle tales, snitches and informants, coupled with a nation of power hungry, over controlling officials, it’s next to impossible for a normal person to navigate the road to Freedom. Unfortunately some the worst spineless bastards have become “teachers” or what passes as such these days, makes you glad you grew up with the teachers of long ago and even then by high school the mentally screwed up ones were showing their psychosis, taking their problems out on innocent students, good students too, made me take the GED early so I could get out of it cause I’d go off on them and ooh how they didn’t like that especially when they found out they couldn’t do anything about it since I was already in the alternative classes. You can also just provide your kids with all the books you can get your hands on, if your kids are into learning and want to get somewhere, they’ll self teach themselves a lot that way and I’m sure there’s plenty of things you can find online that can help you to figure out “class plans” same as what teachers come up with so you can home school them, take them to museums, opera, classical music concerts etc anything to grow their interests in the direction they want to pursue, it’s good for bonding with them as well, helping them avoid all the pitfalls that can come with the teen years or earlier these days.

Yes and no, they should be pissed that our public schools have deteriorated into the pathetic excuse for an education that they’ve become, we all pay for them and somewhere along the line they just started hiring anyone they could find to teach and clearly there are a lot of them who shouldn’t be let anywhere near our kids. Not all parents can afford or have the time to send them to private or home school them, they have both parents scrambling just to keep the family’s heads above water which is a completely planned scenario imo, they need us all uneducated as much as possible since it’s much easier to control us and keep our minds on everything but them and the screwed up mess they’ve made of everyones lives, the last thing they want is a population that just might figure out what’s really going on and do something about it.
I have said the same thing on other posts: We didn’t raise kids knowing for forty years now (making decision to be child free in 70’s) gov was corrupt to the core and globalist agendas. We were both blue collar workers and we knew then we couldn’t afford kids. People don’t need kids if mom can’t stay home and home school or work and pay for Christian schools. Progressivism has been around for decades, back to at least early 20th century. It kinda died out when WWII began. It was quiet for a few more decades but has, once again, reared it’s ugly head. Only, this time, our leaders of western nations are are on board, not with reining it in but accommodating it. In America, think “common core”. We have to stop them while we still have a chance.
I recall the days when I was in high school and the gun safety course was taught by the Superintendent of schools.
If everything reported in this article is true, the teacher should be fired or face disciplinary action somehow. If the assignment was made and the student presented it and it was graded, that should have been enough to end the discussion.

The student wrote a paper in support of the Constitution, and the school called the cops on him. This is so bizarre I cannot believe it. The right to bear arms is a basic civil right. All this kid did was write a paper defending that right, which is protected by the Constitution. And the school called the cops on him. Unbelievable. This is thought control, censorship, and indoctrination. The parents were right to take him out of that school.
The school administrators should have been suspended for this.

Home-schooling is not the best answer to issues like this – for most parents, it is a measure of last resort. Not that there is anything wrong with home-schooling. In fact, most of the research that I have seen suggest there is very little down-side to home-schooling other than a lack of subject expertise on the part of the “teacher.” It is hard for a parent or parents to be capable of teaching all high school subjects at a high level of proficiency. Fortunately, nowadays that drawback can be mitigated with solid curriculum documents, good textbooks, and proficient use of the Internet.
If it were my child in this situation, I would pull him out of school too. I just wouldn’t think that I had solved anything because pulling a child out of the school system does nothing to improve the school system. It does nothing to address the underlying problem. At best, it only solves a problem for one child. I hope that more parents will work to change this sort of absurd overreach from within the educational system instead of abandoning it. Seems to me that if we want a good educational system, we need to make sure that the values of inclusion, diversity, and social justice that the political left loves to preach are expanded to everyone, not just minority or special interest groups.
Administrators at this school, and the school board need to answer some questions. For instance: 1) How does your decision to suspend this child for holding a view contrary to yours help to promote education in critical thinking? 2) How does your decision promote citizenship and knowledge of the constitution, in particular the first and second amendments. 3) How does your decision to use information gathered by (potentially) unlawfully accessing a student’s private computer storage device fit with existing cybercrime legislation.

Contact the ACLJ, American Center for Law & Justice, and the NRA. You’ll get a pro bono representation out of them for sure, and probably will anyway as an incident of NRA membership (there is some legal representation given as insurance.) Don’t back down! That’s what the school wants. Pull the filthy libtard dept. of education right out into the open and sue the pants off them! Make examples out of them all, just like they all do to the right wingers. It’s do or die now son, the election is here, and will probably be martial-lawed out of existence.
ACLJ does not take cases that do not promote the religious causes that their constituents financially support. I have called them regarding infringements of liberty before. They are an IRS owned US-26-501-(c)-3 Corporation that serves the dollar, not righteousness.
