The President has been caught in yet another lie (or the same lie hundreds of times) when he said (over and over and over again):
If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what.
In case you aren’t sure when President Obama said that, watch him say it 36 times in the past few years here:
(It almost needs a techno beat behind it. But anyway…)
At this point, personal horror stories of premium price hikes and insurance cancellations are seemingly coming out every other five minutes. What do I mean by horror stories? Consider the op-ed of the woman fighting cancer who is about to get dumped by her insurance company thanks to Obamacare:
Everyone now is clamoring about Affordable Care Act winners and losers. I am one of the losers.
My grievance is not political; all my energies are directed to enjoying life and staying alive, and I have no time for politics. For almost seven years I have fought and survived stage-4 gallbladder cancer, with a five-year survival rate of less than 2% after diagnosis. I am a determined fighter and extremely lucky. But this luck may have just run out: My affordable, lifesaving medical insurance policy has been canceled effective Dec. 31.
She is not alone. A new website MyCancellation.com has cropped up where people can send in their cancellation/price hike letters to share with the rest of America. Here’s a sampling:
This person’s health insurance rate is being hiked to $934.99 a month under Obamacare.
This person wrote, “Thanks to the UCA (Unaffordable Healthcare Act)”, his premium would increase to $1,106.85.
For this person to keep insurance on himself and his family, it would cost $655.40 per pay period, which he noted would cost as much as a mortgage on a four-bedroom house annually.
Tales of health insurance woe go on and on. One person wrote on their letter that certain prescription medications which were previously covered would be discontinued as of January 1st, 2014 per “employer decision” due to Obamacare taking effect.
Another sent in his letter with a note that not only would the next closest plan offered double his monthly costs, but he is a 40-year-old man whose wife has her own insurance, so he doesn’t need maternity coverage (something our nation’s Health and Human Services Director, Kathleen Sebelius, has argued all men apparently need because healthcare plans have a range of services whether they get used or not… even though that range of services being added to everyone’s plan is part of what is hiking prices so high).
The cancellation letters continue page after page after page. People saw increases of 76% to 100% to 167% and more in their monthly premium prices if they even got to keep their insurance at all, which many do not.
Obama apologized in an interview with Chuck Todd on NBC. He said, “I am sorry that they, you know, are finding themselves in this situation, based on assurances they got from me.”
But as Forbes contributor Avik Roy points out, the president then went on in the same interview to spread more ACA falsehoods and completely misrepresent the severity of how hard Obamacare is hitting the average American.
First, Obama said that the hikes are only hitting 5% of the population. In reality, Roy estimates that at least a third of the population is getting screwed under the so-called Affordable Care Act:
As I noted last week, in 2010, the Obama administration estimated that 93 million Americans would be unable to keep their prior health coverage under the narrow grandfathering provisions issued by the administration in June 2010. My colleague Chris Conover estimates that the number is 129 million. And we are here only talking about disruptions to private health plans, and not counting the law’s $716 billion in cuts to Medicare.
Then, Obama said America would get better care at the same price…or cheaper! But that’s wholly inaccurate according to a recent analysis by Forbes:
Obamacare forcibly increases the premiums paid by healthy people in order to correct this perceived inequity. And most people are healthy rather than sick, which is why our recent Manhattan Institute analysis of individual-market insurance premiums found that the average state faces a 41 percent increase in rates relative to the old system.
Some of these people—especially older individuals—will benefit from taxpayer-funded subsidies marshaled by the law. But our analysis shows that most Americans will face premium increases, despite the application of subsidies.
Finally, the president says we want Obamacare: “What we intended to do…is to make sure that everybody is moving into better plans because they want ’em, as opposed to because they’re forced into it.”
So the government doesn’t want to force people onto Obamacare, but you’ll get fined if you don’t get insurance? Roy sums up the truth quite succinctly:
Obamacare was explicitly intended to abolish the old market for individually-purchased health coverage, and replace it with a new, more heavily-regulated one that forces healthier and younger individuals to pay more, whether they want to or not.
And further:
What makes Obamacare such a deeply flawed piece of work is not that it disrupts our existing arrangements, but that it disrupts those arrangements by forcing people to buy costlier coverage.
And not only does Obamacare force people to buy costlier coverage, it most significantly punishes a population that is already disadvantaged in our current system: people of average income who buy coverage on their own, and don’t benefit from the heavy subsidies enjoyed by people with government- or employer-sponsored insurance.
Obamacare is one more national outrage everyone is being forced to suffer.
Hey, remember that one time when then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said, “we have to pass the health care bill so that you can find out what is in it”?
Well, I guess now we know.
Meanwhile, new health insurance cancellation and premium price hike letters are being added every day at MyCancellation.com. If you’d like to contribute your Obamacare box of health insurance fail to the growing pile, you can send a picture or scan to [email protected].
