American Interest in and Aversion to Electric Vehicles Varies by State (Chart Included)

Electric vehicles (EVs) of all makes, models, and sizes have been associated with numerous significant problems – perhaps most conspicuously their fires (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14) and other battery-related woes (see 1, 2, 3, 4). Earlier this year, Wyoming lawmakers introduced a bill to ban them in their state. Of course, the majority of Americans in other states still don’t seem jazzed about EVs either.

The adoption and openness to electric cars vary significantly between states in the United States.

As Statista’s Martin Armstrong details below, while some states appear to be embracing EVs in large numbers as the future of transportation, others states are home to large majorities seemingly still skeptical about the feasibility and practicality of electric vehicles.

As data from the Statista Consumer Insights survey shows, California is one state that is at the forefront of the electric car revolution, with over 30 percent of respondents saying they consider the propulsion type ‘electric’ when buying a car.

New York, Maryland and New Hampshire also had over 30 percent keeping an EV in mind in 2022.

On the other end of the scale, states like North Dakota, Kentucky and Alaska showed relatively little interest in adopting electric cars as a viable transportation option.

Additional issues that have been identified in EVs include:

They are vulnerable to hacking
Larger models with bigger batteries pose more safety and environmental risks
Charging them threatens power grids (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and medical implants
Mining for EV battery ingredients is NOT eco-friendly
They emit high levels of biologically and environmentally harmful electromagnetic and wireless radiation (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)

Despite EVs’ ongoing reported issues and Americans lack of interest in investing in them, the Biden Administration continues to fund their manufacturing, maintenance, and operation as well as refers to them as eco-friendly (see 1, 2, 3, 4).
