Duke Energy Reported 650 Million Attempted Cyberattacks in 2017. Damn “Smart” Meters and Grids…

According to a recent report issued by The U.S. Dept of Energy, cyberattacks are on the rise – to put it mildly.

Duke Energy, one of the largest power companies in the nation serving 7.6 million customers reported more than 650 million cyberattacks in 2017.

Experts have warned that utility companies who install “Smart” Meters and Grids are putting themselves at greater risk for them.  Some companies sell software to try to prevent these attacks – however – they offer no guarantee that it will actually work.

Since at least 2010, Duke Energy has been installing their “Smart” Meters and Grids in 6 states.  Earlier this year, they were found guilty of 127 cybersecurity violations between 2015 and 2018.  Over the years there have also been all kinds of complaints reported about Duke’s “Smart” meters.  This is why customers have been fighting in all 6 states to have original analog meters instead.  Media outlets have reported about this in each state.  Activist Post has reported about this many times as well (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

Unfortunately, all “Smart” Meters and Grids are problematic.  It doesn’t matter which utility company installs them.  It’s not just about fires and explosions either.  They are not beneficial to customers and they are bad for the environment.
