Smart Grids and Smart Meters are relatively new technology. They also aren’t necessary at all. Think about it: before this technology was introduced, most of us enjoyed electric, gas, and water utilities right?
Smart Grids and Meters are vulnerable to security issues because everything is connected together often using Internet of Things (IoT) technology which in itself is very vulnerable. Utility companies force this technology on customers anyway because they make more money with them than without them.
Tens of millions of utility Smart Meters have been installed in the U.S. and worldwide so it’s likely that you have them on your home and throughout your community. Because of all the issues reported, some utility companies are not referring to them as “Smart” Meters anymore though.
In addition to cybersecurity vulnerability, issues include fires and explosions, frequent replacement, higher bills, privacy violations, and more. A documentary was produced about this in 2013, Take Back Your Power.
Because taxpayers are often being forced to pay for this vulnerable technology with rate increases, there’s no incentive for utility companies to stop promoting it and forcing installation on customers. Sierra Wireless recently sent out an email to subscribers inviting them to their free webinar on May 14 when they will teach utility companies how to make their Smart Grids more secure. It’s beyond ridiculous. Remember – Smart Grids and “Smart” Meters are not necessary.
Each state is assigned a public utilities commission (PUC) which is supposed to protect customers from being exploited by utility companies. Unfortunately, some PUCs promote and force Smart Grids and Smart Meters on customers as well. Fortunately, some elected officials and organizations are helping citizens make progress in stopping this in their states.
