Paul Lewis, a senior Obama Administration official, testified in front of the House Foreign Affairs Committee that former detainees from Guantanamo Bay have killed Americans.
“Let me ask you this,” House representative Dana Rohrabacher asked Lewis, “We say that about 30%, or whatever that figure is, that have been released have returned to terrorist activities. How many lives have been lost by those terrorists that went back to their terrorist activities.”
“I can talk about that in a classified setting,” Lewis went on to explain before getting interrupted by Rohrabacher.
“So is it over ten?” Rohrabacher asked.
“Sir, what I can tell you is unfortunately there have been Americans that have died because of GITMO detainees,” Lewis responded.
The Obama Admin official went on to explain that it’s the best judgement of the Administration that the risk of keeping GITMO open has outweighed closing the terrorist prison.
“So the innocent people who are going to lose their lives because of this, they’re just part of the equation,” Rep. Dana Rohrabacher fiercely addressed Lewis.
According to a report issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the number of detainees released from the Guantanamo Bay prison who have reengaged in terrorism has doubled since July 2015.
The report found that a total of 118 out of 676 freed former detainees were confirmed of having reengaged in terrorist acts since 2009.
